Aspen Avionics EDF1000 Installation

The Avionics Shop at Virginia Aviation is currently in the process of installing their first Aspen Avionics EFD1000 Pro Primary Flight Display unit.  This is the latest retrofit unit that allows aircraft owners the ability to install "Glass Cockpit" functionality in their traditional "Steam Gauge" aircraft.  We have completed the majority of the installation.  The Remote Sensor Module (RSM) is mounted on the outside of the aircraft and contains a Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS), GPS antenna, and Outside Air Temperature (OAT) probe.  The RSM must be mounted in a magnetically quiet location that was not easy to find on this aircraft.  The Analog Convertor Unit (ACU) is mounted to the bottom of the glove box and contains all the interfaces from the GPS, NAV receivers, and the autopilot.  The actual EFD1000 is mounted where the Attitude indicator and DG were previously located.  This now gives the aircraft owner full redundancy with an electric attitude indicator and a backup vacuum indicator.  The EFD1000 will display Navigation information from the GPS and NAV1.  It will also display GPS moving map information.  It contains an operational backup GPS and internal backup battery.  We will soon have a demonstration unit available and we invite you to stop by and talk to Jason about installing this innovative product in your aircraft.
